Description

Hazelhurst Academy is more than just a prestigious boarding school; it is a breeding ground for secrets, social climbing, and the kind of high-stakes tension that changes lives forever. When a new student arrives, she finds herself thrust into a world where power is the ultimate currency and the lines between friendship and desire blur with intoxicating speed. As she navigates shifting alliances and the intimidating charm of the school’s elite clique, she discovers that being a "tricky girl" isn’t just about survival—it’s about claiming what you want in a system designed to keep you in your place. What unfolds is a simmering, multi-layered romance that defies tradition. Each relationship the protagonist navigates brings a new kind of intensity, forcing her to confront her own vulnerabilities and ambitions. Holly Thorne crafts a vibrant landscape where the chemistry is palpable and the emotional stakes feel profoundly authentic. By centering exclusively queer experiences, the narrative avoids tired tropes, offering instead a refreshing, sizzling exploration of identity and intimacy. For readers who crave a sophisticated "why-choose" dynamic grounded in genuine character growth and sharp, unapologetic storytelling, this is an irresistible deep dive into the hearts and minds of the girls of Hazelhurst.

Delicious

Soo good. The kind of why choose dark romance we’ve needed more of for a while now.

It’s of the culture.

I’m usually not one to leave reviews, but I felt my time with this book was good enough that saying *something* was warranted. Specifically I wanted to compliment Ms. Thorne on writing characters that genuinely felt queer. Having read my fair share of sapphic romance novels, I find that more often then not, they’re romance novels first and queer novels second. But way the characters talk in this book, from their interactions with others and their own internal narrations feel far more realistic to my experience with queer women. Elly admitting to Tilda that she’s probably non binary and has considered top surgery, Haz revealing that she packs, Tilda hanging onto that label of straight like her life depends on it. I’ve known actual people who’ve done each of those things. And it feels so great to see that reflected in this book. So many other Sapphic romances fail at this. Queerness doesn’t really exist in those books. Queer culture doesn’t really exist. In so many of those books, the main couple don’t feel like they love each other the way two women do in the real world. So finding a book that talks about fear of labels, that references the relationship between gender and lesbianism, that explores the complicated and confusing line between friendship and attractions, all in ways that feel real? This book was well worth my time.

Great, But Need the Next Book

I really enjoyed this book. The characters, their interactions, the story and the spice were all great. My only problems were that I forgot this was a first book, I was hoping for a complete resolution. My other problem was I was hoping for more of the kinky spice scenes that a few characters were infamous for. I cannot wait for a sequel and hope it is as good as the first.

Good story, not my thing

First of all, the story here was really good. I was invested in the plot and the characters were really interesting. The why choose was 10/10 and the spice was spicing. I'll be honest, I wasn't a fan of the author's writing style. There were a lot of run-on sentences, and I felt that there were a couple of instances where things "show, not tell" could have been utilized. All in all, the story was intriguing and I was invested in the spice and romance, and I genuinely hope that the second book has a happy ending because omfg those girls are in for a ride.
