I am a total sucker for friends-to-lovers, and Haley Cass wrote an absolute banger.
Those Who Wait is a wonderful book about two friends, Sutton and Charlotte, who slowly realize that maybe they want more than friendship. Sutton is in her final year of her Master's Degree, and Charlotte is running for public office. The two of them cross paths on a dating app, and they strike up a friendship. Sutton has little-to-no sexual experience, and wants her first time with a woman to be special and romantic. Charlotte has the experience, but her career path makes no room for romance. Seemingly on total opposite ends of the dating spectrum, the two women instead decide to just be friends. And they are. They're really good friends. Friends who cuddle during movies, and who kiss each other on the cheek to say hello and goodbye, and who attend fancy galas together, and who can't go a full day without talking to each other, and who turn each other on more than anyone else they've ever met. That's normal just-friends behavior, right?
Haley Cass has an incredible talent and skill at creating fully fleshed out characters with oceans of depth. We're dropped into this world full of sweetness, sexual tension, overwhelming yearning and angst, and a heart bursting with happiness. Those Who Wait contains such complex characters with multitudes of layers and emotions. Forgive me if this review is a bit all over the place -- I have just been crying for the last 100 pages and am emotionally compromised.
Not only can Haley Cass write a damn good romance, she can really deftly write…
Haley Cass has once again proven her mastery of storytelling with Those Who Wait. From the very first page, I was captivated by her remarkable character development. The depth and authenticity she brings to Sutton and Charlotte are nothing short of extraordinary. Each chapter felt like a personal journey with them, and I found myself deeply invested in their lives.
Haley has a unique ability to make her characters feel real and relatable. Sutton and Charlotte’s journey is filled with genuine emotions, challenges, and growth, which kept me turning the pages, eager to see what would happen next. The way their relationship evolves is beautifully paced, with every interaction leaving a lasting impact.
What truly sets Those Who Wait apart is how it balances heartwarming moments with realistic struggles, making it a story that resonates on many levels. Haley Cass' writing style is engaging, and she effortlessly draws readers into the world she has created. It’s clear that a lot of thought and care went into every aspect of this book.
I can’t recommend Those Who Wait enough. It’s a poignant, hawt, beautifully written story that stays with you long after the final page. Haley Cass has crafted a masterpiece that will undoubtedly leave readers, like myself, eagerly awaiting her next work. Luckily, Haley has a Patreon where she undoubtedly spoils her readers with content consistently throughout the month. The community is lively, fun, warm, and inviting. If you can't get enough of…
This story was so well written, and the characters were well described and developed. The trials and tribulations the two MC’s went through was tough to read at times.
I enjoyed how their relationship developed, and morphed into love, although Charlotte was unwilling to admit it on her part.
The secondary characters were well written, and added to the drama. The HEA was well done, and I must say that the love scenes were 🔥🔥.
I read dozens of books in this genre, year to year, and get jaded by even the big-name authors who seem to get pretty repetitive and phoned-in after a while. This book was a ray of welcome light.
Things I loved about it: good, long, solid story- 600+ pages, and all of it well written, interesting, and highly readable. Really tired of all the ~200 page short stories that sell as novels, anymore. You showed us good writing doesn't have to be quick-and-out-the-door, and I like that a lot.
All of the characters were interesting and well-formed, not just the protagonists. The friends and family all felt real and relatable, which made for an engrossing tale.
Oh, don't let me forget to mention that the romance was beautiful and memorable and sweet, and, um... hawt! In a very sensual yet tasteful way. I can't think of any book that I have enjoyed as much as this one, in the past few years... and I've read a lot of very good ones :-)
My only complaint, is you need some better proofreading- there were a fair number of grammatical and other word errors throughout, which detracted a bit from the flow of the story with their occasional 'wtf?' appearances.
But I will still give it a wholehearted 5 stars. Great story, great romance, great book- well done! Hope for more soon.

4.5-stars—superb debut novel. Packed with emotions.
4.5-stars—superb debut novel. I absolutely devoured this book. Yes, I occasionally reread some sections, BUT the writer captured emotions, and I fell in love with the characters.
But readers, please keep in mind: What is one person’s cup of tea may not be another’s.
In case you didn’t see, this book is fiction.
Was the plot realistic? The dating app was a bit of a stretch, but it didn’t bother me because I found the story and characters captivating. The dynamics between Charlotte and Sutton hooked me, and I loved the intimate moments. I could feel the emotions. And yeah, I’d let Charlotte do whatever she wanted to with me. Also, I spent a career having to be in the closet, because at the time, it was illegal for me to be a lesbian and hold a security clearance. I’ve never been a politician, but it’s still an uphill climb. The world is not perfect. So, that part of the story—the fear Charlotte tamped down—was real for me.
Was it wordy? For some readers, it probably bored them. But the style worked for me because, again, I felt the emotions of the characters.
Was this book perfect? No. Find me a perfect human, and then Grammar Hound, you can b*t*h. Your 1 star was cruel. Yes, the author could improve in some areas, but as I said, I felt the characters’ emotions. In the end, I loved this book.
