Description

Basil likes his life quiet, predictable, and firmly tucked away from the prying eyes of the Mt Eden community. As a librarian, he’s perfectly content blending into the scenery—which is exactly how he prefers to keep his magical nature under wraps. Being a closeted witch is a delicate balancing act, and Basil has mastered the art of staying invisible. Everything changes when Sebastian, a charismatic and relentless paranormal investigator, saunters into the library with a camera crew in tow. Sebastian is chasing ghosts for his web series, but he accidentally stumbles onto something far more interesting: the mysterious librarian himself. As the two are forced into an uneasy orbit, the stakes rise. There is a spectral book thief haunting the stacks, a brewing magical mystery to solve, and the unavoidable, magnetic pull between a cautious, introverted witch and an adventurous, sunshine-filled ghost hunter. Basil must decide if keeping his secrets is worth the price of losing the one person who makes his magical life feel truly illuminated. Packed with supernatural charm and heart-fluttering romance, this cozy urban fantasy proves that some stories are far too enchanting to stay hidden on the shelf.

Cute and short

Honestly my only complaint is a rather abrupt ending. But overall it was really really cute! Basil was adorable and I loved his and Sebastian's interactions. The ghost storyline was really sweet. I just would have liked a little more, especially right after they solved the mystery. What the reaction was to the state of the library and the letters. Things like that. Overall a solid cute magical story!

I loved this although I had to stop reading it at night

I evidently have a very overactive imagination and a low tolerance to read anything a little scary at night. I loved the story and can't wait to read the next one!

AWESOME!

This book was one that I read in one sitting - which isn't very common for me. Overdues and Occultism is a book that moves fast, but also takes time to build suspense. There's a really sweet romance that feels genuine, not at all forced. The majority of the book is set in a library which also worked super well. Being that the book is written by a New Zealand author, there was a lot of familiarity, almost like reading about a memory of an old friend. The ending, which I will not spoil, offered a brief but real look into some struggles people face to be themselves, which I enjoyed, too. Overall, I did really enjoy this book! Will certainly be reading more of Jamie Sands' books.

a fun short

This was a short, sweet story. Basil was adorkable, and Sebastian's enthusiasm was catching. It was a little too fast-paced, but it was cute, with warm fuzzies, and definitely worth a read

Wholesome cute & queer fun read

This was a super wholesome and fun book about a librarian-witch who finds himself helping out a not-so-local ghost hunter and falls in love along the way. I loved reading this book for the plot and characters, but as a librarian it was also delightful to actually have my profession portrayed incredibly accurately. It's a very quick read and not deep/complex, but I found it to be a perfect palette cleanser between the heavier books I usually gravitate to. I highly recommend this to anyone who is just looking to spend a little while meeting mildly disastrous queer characters having a bit of a slowburn romance, with their queerness being a complete non-issue.
