Description

For elite gymnasts Danny Hartman and Sasha Zakaryan, life is a high-stakes balancing act performed under the brightest spotlights in the world. As Team USA and Team Russia rivals, they are supposed to be competitors, not lovers. Yet, buried beneath the pressure of Olympic training and the exhausting demands of their sport, the two are caught in a secret, long-distance relationship that feels more fragile than a glass ornament. The Rio Games act as a catalyst for heartbreak. When a massive scandal erupts within Team USA, Danny finds his world crumbling, and he desperately turns to Sasha for support. However, Sasha is fighting his own private battles, leaving Danny to wonder if their connection is one bad landing away from total collapse. Seeking redemption, Danny invites Sasha to train in the California sunshine, hoping for a fresh start. But the distance—both physical and emotional—remains a daunting obstacle. As Danny grows weary of hiding their love, Sasha faces the paralyzing fear that their exposure could cost him everything back home. With their dreams and their hearts hanging in the balance, the pair must decide if their love is worth risking it all, or if they are destined to fall.

Emotion-driven MM sports romance

Going for Gold is the 2nd book in the Heart of Gold series by Ariel Atwater. This is a very emotional story of two elite gymnasts who are trying to survive a long-distance relationship. They are both under extreme stress from not only the pressure of competing at an elite level and chasing Olympic dreams, but also the cultural dynamics of being members of the LGBTQ community, the physical and mental toll of constant training, the difficulty of maintaining a long-distance relationship, all while dealing with individual crises. Danny just wants to love Sasha out loud, but Sasha lives in fear of their secret relationship being found out, because for him, the cost of discovery could be everything. Tropes: • sports (Olympic gymnasts) romance • hidden relationship • slow-burn/emotional yearning • long-distance secret relationship • MM romance

Great Series

I love all things Ariel Atwater, and this does not disappoint; this is book two in The Heart of Gold series. I read the first book in the series so I could understand this book better; I do recommend that! Danny Hartman is on the US Olympic gymnastic team, and training for the Rio Olympics. He is bisexual. Sasha is a gymnast from Russia, trying to make their Olympic team, he is also bisexual. Sasha and Danny are trying to maintain a long distance relationship, and not letting anyone know about it; or letting anyone know they are bisexual! Sasha especially, as Russia has "no gays' in their country. Can these two make this relationship work with only seeing each other a few times a year?? Love the plot, great setting, and strong intense interesting characters. I can't wait for the next book in the series!!

The cliffhanger I forgot about

Omg this way beyond good! She’s always wanted him but timing, was never on her side plus she thought he didn’t like her. Trying to break up her bestie from making a huge mistake, leads to them fake dating. And omg he’s so good for her! This has humor, heat, and love and so perfect!! Loved this!!!

So many emotions

Going for Gold is the second book in the Heart of Gold trilogy and should be read in order. This is a really tough, emotional read about Danny and Sasha. These two men are going through so much to be together, I can't wait for the third book in the series to see what happens with them.
