Description

Thirteen years ago, Evan committed a betrayal that has haunted his every waking moment. When a desperate, younger Reid first begged for help, Evan turned his back, leaving him to face a life of cruelty and abandonment. That single mistake became a permanent stain on Evan’s conscience, a heavy burden of guilt that he has never been able to set down. Now, fate has offered a fragile window for redemption. When Reid’s dangerous past re-emerges and his family attempts to drag him back into the shadows, Evan finally has the chance to choose differently. This time, he is determined to be the sanctuary Reid never had. But proving his worth to a man who has learned to expect nothing but pain is a monumental task. As Evan protects Reid, he finds himself falling for the resilient, deeply wounded man—only to wonder if his past failure has irrevocably severed the bridge to a potential future together. Spanning themes of atonement, self-worth, and the healing power of love, this M/M shifter-human romance is a poignant exploration of second chances. Can the ghost of a past mistake be laid to rest, or did Evan forfeit his soulmate long before they had a chance to begin?

Evan and Reid.

Reid deserved his happiness! Poor babe went through so much. I also love him having Adhd too, it was depicted perfectly. Evan was a green flag all around. Cannot wait for the next read!

Two more of MCs from Lark's world that I am thrilled to know

Lark always can be counted on to paint a really accurate mental health rep. Reid's ADHD was described in minute detail, his brain working like lots of others I know with this syndrome. He wasn't that fond of it, but Evan was. It was a long journey to get Reid to accept himself and like himself, luckily Evan's family really helped, especially his mother. It was a long journey to get Reid to see the real Evan and for Evan to see how he could not have done anything differently when Reid asked for rescue. I am really glad I was there to watch it happen. Be prepared for visits and names dropped in the best ways from the other series. Another great book from Lark!

Evan

I absolutely loved this book! This whole universe has consumed me whole and I recommend it all the time but Evan is now one of my absolute favorites!!! Evan is such a sweet, loyal, golden retriever.. he's everything Reid needs! And Reid, sweet, sweet Reid. That poor man had such a rough life and no real care seeing Evan come in and take care of and love him so wholly, even when he didn't realize he loved him... Ugh sooo good! Reid's little ADHD brain was amazing and I loved his little "brain adventures". Reminded me so much of my daughter lol I highly recommend this book, this series, and this whole damn universe!!! (The audiobooks are amazing!!!)

Another 5 stars from the Queen of PNR

What is it that Lark puts in her books? Why are they ALL so goooooooood?? All of her books have been at least 4,5 stars for me. This one wasn't any different. Excellent! Spicy, found family, mental health rep, healing from a traumatic events, feel good moments. Everything you could ask for! Evan was a such a beautiful representation of what a good partner should be. And that last chapter with Calan??? Did I started to scream? Ou hell yeah I did 😍❤️ CAN NOT WAIT TO READ the next book from Lark Taylor... Counting down the days for that

good but not my favorite in the series.

Overall a good story. I’ve read several books in these related series and have enjoyed them. I’ve mostly read them on KU but needed to get some things done around the house the day I started Evan, so I decided to buy the audiobook so I could listen while I cleaned. This isn’t a narrator I’m overly familiar with but he was good. I don’t love when there’s a single narrator but he did a nice job differentiating between multiple male characters. If there’s one criticism it’s that he made Reid sound pretty whiny at times. Maybe that’s part of the reason why Reid’s character wore thin with me about halfway through the book. Maybe earlier. Yes you have trauma but it was the same thing over and over and over. It got tedious and felt like lazy storytelling. Meanwhile Evan was better but there was a little of the same with him, too, just not as whiny. It was interesting reading (hearing) some of the scenes from the first book played out from a different perspective. I did enjoy that. Definitely worth reading, and I’m looking forward to the next. The backstory was interesting but I wish there had been a little care put into how Reid dealt with his childhood instead of taking one trauma response and repeating it 15 times.
