Description

Ella Baker is officially at rock bottom, and the view is anything but pretty. Within a single, disastrous week, she’s been dumped six days before her wedding, abandoned by her jet-setting family, and unceremoniously fired from her job. Desperate for a reset, she decides to trade her crumbling reality for the pages of a book club—the ultimate "out of character" maneuver. But she soon learns that even fiction can’t prepare her for the dramatic entanglements of real life. Enter Max Wyler, a divorce mediator who views romantic promises with deep skepticism. Max is as guarded as she is magnetic, seeking nothing more than a quiet escape until she clashes with the irrepressible, sunshine-soaked Ella. The chemistry between them is immediate and electric, threatening to upend Max’s carefully curated, cynicism-fueled life. There is just one monumental hurdle: Max happens to be the ex-girlfriend who shattered the heart of Ella’s best friend. As feelings intensify, the forbidden nature of their attraction turns the book club into a high-stakes arena of secrets and yearning. Caught between loyalty and an undeniable pull toward the woman who was supposed to be off-limits, Ella must decide if some risks are worth the inevitable fallout.

“Five Stars! A definite re-read!”

In the words of Ariana, “Five Stars! A definite re-read!” As usual, this is another excellent book by Melissa Brayden. I’ve been reading her books since, “Waiting in the Wings” and my all time favorite book and character of hers is “Heart Block” and Sarah Matamoros. Well written women of color are hard to come by in any genre. But as a Chicana, I can say Sarah was one of the most authentic Mexican women characters written, especially by a non-Mexican. By this I also mean, in part, that I didn’t cringe once throughout the book. The same is true with Max in this book. Yes, her Filipino culture informed her character, but it didn’t rely on lazy stereotypes. Such a good read! :-)

Little Disappointing

Melissa Brayden is one of my favorite authors. This one fell short for me. Although the characters of Ella & Max were well defined, there was just too much focus on their relationship. There could have been more to the story - too much of the story was love scenes between Ella and Max. I would have liked to have seen more attention given to developing more of Rachel's reaction to Ella dating Max, the characters of the book club, and even the bookstore itself. For me, it was just too focused on the love scenes, not enough substance outside of that.

A great HOT love story!

First, you can't go wrong with a Melissa Brayden book! She really delivered with this one. Ella lost her fiance's 6 days before her wedding and then was an after thought firing at work. Her best friend Rachel talks her into coming to live with her and get her feet back in the ground. She goes to a sapphic book club and meets Em. Instant attraction for both women. They share a kiss and numbers. Then Ella finds out Em is Maxine or Max, Rachel's ex. The book club calls her M, short for Max. We find the two falling hard for each other but with the hurdle of Rachel and Max's relationship with her mother. What a great, HOT love story! A FAVORITE!! 5 stars!

TOO LONG

OK , I get it, they are destined to be together. All the tropes are present all cliches are covered can We Skip To The End? NO we have read through a redundant and lengthy 2nd devastating breakup and makeup and finally we can move to the canned HEA ending. All the extra Details and Drama added nothing to this story, it just made it endlessly long. BORING!
