Description

Living in the shadow of his charismatic roommate, Tate, has always been a quiet, agonizing exercise in restraint for our narrator. He plays the part of the harmless, studious roommate, safely compartmentalizing his deepening longing for the one man who seems perpetually out of reach. It is a one-sided devotion built on silence and inevitable heartbreak. Following an accidental, mortifying intrusion that leaves him reeling, the narrator makes a desperate, impulsive wish on a falling star: for Tate to wake up gay. It is a foolish superstition born of pure exhaustion, a final plea to make the ache stop. Yet, when the sun rises, the atmosphere in their shared apartment has shifted fundamentally. Tate emerges from his room acting fundamentally different—perceptively intense, unnervingly calm, and suddenly focused on the narrator in a way that suggests he is well aware of the secret hanging in the air. When Tate offers a clandestine invitation to finally speak the truth, the narrator stands at the precipice of a life-altering choice. Faced with an impossible reality that defies logic, he must decide whether to play it safe or gamble everything on the terrifying possibility that his wish actually came true.
