Description

Once a fearsome pirate queen whose name haunted every sea shanty, Briar has been reduced to a shadow of her former self. After killing her betrothed to escape a gilded cage, she was cursed to exist on land, where even a single drop of seawater means certain death. Now living as a disgraced princess turned undercover spy, Briar spends her days as a king’s courtesan and her nights hunting for a way to break the magic tethering her to the dry earth. When the King announces a brutal competition promising the winner a single wish, Briar sees her only path to redemption. She assumes a stolen identity and enters the deadly trials, determined to reclaim the ocean as her home. However, she has an unexpected obstacle: Kressa, a ruthless bounty hunter who is tasked with tracking down the very pirate alias Briar has adopted. To complicate matters, Kressa is also the woman Briar is meant to betray as a spy—and the only person whose touch has begun to reignite the dormant, forbidden magic in her blood. With the Gales’ trials pushing them to their breaking points, Briar must navigate a treacherous web of espionage and desire. In a high-stakes race where identities are fluid and secrets are deadly, she will have to decide if her freedom is worth the cost of the heart she wasn't supposed to lose.

Best New Sapphic Romantasy

Haley has done something special here—she takes tropes we know and love (lost princess, trials, enemies to lovers) and makes them sparkle. This book is fast paced from the jump, sucking the reader in with high stakes, quick-witted dialogue, and the perfect amount of romantic tension. It was a joy to read!

page turner

Just when I thought I knew what was happening… there was a complete twist or a new factor that played in the next part of the story. The only thing I’m upset about what this book is that the sequel doesn’t come out till this summer.

Rough Seas, Sharp Edges

4.5 stars I kinda knew I’d like this book just from the plot description. Pirates? Trials? Bad a** women? Sold before page one. Briar might be the most chaotic MC I’ve read in a while and I was not mad about it. A cursed princess hiding in plain sight, once the most feared captain on the water, now one drop of seawater away from death. That irony alone had me hooked. What this book does really well is tension both from the competition and the characters themselves. Briar enters under a stolen identity that happens to have a bounty on its head, and she’s been tasked with seducing the bounty hunter collecting it. Every scene between them is layered. Kiss or stab? Genuinely unclear at any given moment. Briar is a perfect mix of ruthless and messy, and I was rooting for her the whole time. Kressa, though? She’s morally complicated, has an interesting backstory, but I never quite felt her the way I felt Briar. The world-building is fun and ambitious but gets a little murky in the details. Flawless? No. But it’s a fun, fast read and a solid setup for the series. Briar deserves her ship back, and I’ll follow her there.
