Description

In the suffocating grip of 1920s Appalachia, identity is a dangerous secret, and the shadows of the woods hold truths far older and more wicked than the dogma preached from the pulpit. Lee Mandelo crafts a haunting gothic atmosphere where Leslie, a trans man fighting for his own existence, finds himself trapped in a world that demands his complete erasure. When a gruesome, supernatural threat begins to stalk the hills, Leslie must navigate the suffocating expectations of his community while confronting the very nature of monstrosity. It is a slow-burn descent into terror, but one fueled by a fierce, undeniable core of queer resilience. As the lines between the hunted and the hunter blur, the story transforms into a visceral meditation on autonomy, faith, and the scorching cost of survival. This is not merely a tale of ghost-haunted landscapes; it is a primal scream of liberation. Mandelo masterfully blends historical grit with dark fantasy to deliver a narrative that is as brutal as it is cathartic. For those who believe retribution is the ultimate act of self-love, this story offers a blood-soaked, unforgettable journey toward a truth that refuses to stay buried.

finally a creepy story!

The whole backwater country Appalachian horror always hits. Throwing in the sprinkle of religion was a chefs kiss lol. This had more a literal horror twist than I thought going in, but it worked. I’ve said it before that I’m not really a fan of novellas..and thats still true I think. I’d like to have seen more of the story, but this built the tension well for what it was. It really did keep growing and had me sitting here like ..where can it go 🤣 It also had a good ending that didn’t feel rushed which we have to applaud. Love to see justice being served!!

small town injustice meets supernatural justice

This book was unexpected. I didn’t think that there was going to be a literal creature. The bad guys were super bad and the good guys had to do some bad things to make things right but overall, I think it was a good book and if you want to read something unexpected this is the book for you..

Horror can be Beautiful

There is a lot going on here in a tightly written 146 pages. It is, on one level, the story of a nurse, carrying the emotional scars of his World War I service, journeying to an isolated, rural Appalachian community to bring important neonatal and other health care services on behalf of the Frontier Nursing Service. There, he will face prejudice, fear, ignorance, danger, and the challenges created by misdirected package delivery. It all will culminate in a gloriously satisfying and appropriately gory resolution. But the book also is a thoughtful mediation on coming out and survival as the "other." Sometimes, monsters must be embraced. The writing is incandescent, with some truly moving passages, particularly in their evocations of the dark and primal forest at night.

A very enjoyable tale of revenge

Honestly, maybe all my horror reading lately broke me a little, but I didn't find this one too scary. It is tense and well written, with deeply satisfying queer themes, and surprising romance elements. Definitely liked it and would happily read more by this author.
