Description

Behind the polished marble halls and the carefully curated public image of a high-powered politician lies a life of suffocating expectations. Catharine is the quintessential Senator’s wife, maintaining a facade of domestic perfection that hides the deep loneliness of a loveless marriage. She has spent years playing the part, until a chance encounter shifts her world on its axis. Enter Alex, a woman whose mere presence defies the rigid constraints Catharine has lived by for so long. As the two women are drawn into each other’s orbits, the professional decorum of the Capitol begins to fray, replaced by an undeniable, magnetic pull that neither can ignore. What starts as a fragile connection quickly blossoms into a slow-burn romance that challenges everything Catharine thought she knew about desire, autonomy, and the courage it takes to pursue happiness. This debut novel masterfully explores the tension between duty and authenticity. Through sharp, evocative prose, the story captures the ache of hidden emotions and the thrill of discovery. It is a deeply human look at the complexity of love in an environment that demands absolute conformity. Perfect for readers who crave rich character development and emotional depth, this story of transformation is as palpable as it is unforgettable.

Wow - what a debut!

MY GOD, this book! It's thrilling when you read something this special, knowing more is to come. On the surface it would seem that wealthy, accomplished businesswoman Catharine Cleveland would have little in common with professional soccer player-on-the-rise Alex Grey. Their lives are so diametrically opposed that their paths may never have crossed if not for that fateful day Alex pulled Catharine from the water after a boating accident. And yet something begins grow between them that neither can deny. But it seems so impossible. Catharine is in a loveless arranged marriage with a United State Senator and Alex is completely focused on her career goal - making the US National Team. Enter the unstoppable force. The heart wants what it wants. This story is so beautifully written and I absolutely love the mains - especially Catharine. How can you NOT fall in love with her?!? She's such a complex character. To avoid her miserable home life, she primarily focuses on growing her family's wildly successful shipping business that she hopes take over one day. She is older than Alex by well over a decade and has settled into a life she didn't want, but is making the best of. She has an eclectic group of friends and is refreshingly down to earth and likable - not what you would expect of someone of her wealth and status. Alex is making a real name for herself in women's soccer, and at age 27 her dream is finally within reach. But one wrong move can ruin them both. While I could go…

Domestic violence trigger

Slow burn, wonderful book. Be aware there is a significant domestic violence scene. This is book 1 of the series so while the ending doesn't resolve everything it does end in a nice enough place. Loved the MCs, wished this book was longer honestly.

How Do I Love This Book, Let Me Count The Ways...

After reading so many glowing reviews on this book, I entered it with some trepidation, worried I was going to be disappointed. I’ve fallen flat on my face before, hoping a novel would meet my expectations. In this case, my hopes were not only fulfilled, but absolutely blown out of the water. The story follows an up and coming professional soccer player, Alex, who meets a wealthy self-made business woman, Catharine, in a sailing accident in South Carolina. The pair are drawn to one another, but it is without any of the common “love at first sight” nonsense so popular in this genre. Instead, the reader is treated to a truly beautiful, slow burn, impeccably developed relationship that deepens over time. Ms. Lyon spends just the right amount of time on character building, developing these two women with immense care and consideration. They are uplifted by the brilliantly written cast of minor characters surrounding them, who are diverse, masterfully written, and entertaining all on their own right. There are scenes in this book that will make you laugh out loud. There are scenes in this book that will make you cry. And there are scenes that will make you fall head over heels in love with these two beautiful women, over and over again. It’s been so long since I have read a book that has made me feel everything this novel made me feel. I was heartbroken. In love. Devastated. And yet, somehow, beautifully put back together again. The book probably isn’t for everyone. It is…

Impressive Debut!

Wow! A new author and emerging talent whom I will be certain to watch. This book is so well written and draws you in from the very first page. The characters slowly reveal themselves, their strengths and vulnerabilities, as you follow their attraction and slow-burning, age-gap romance. In every sentence, each word leaves its mark. The author may be new to her craft, but she is a master storyteller. This is the first of a trilogy and it ends without a HEA but a belief in the future for both protagonists. I can't wait to read the second book as Catharine and Alex overcome obstacles to find that HEA! Women's soccer plays a big part in this story but it is not overdone so that you are still able to follow the plot even if you are not a fan of soccer. Take a chance on this book and new author - you won't be sorry!
