Description

Deep within the oppressive walls of The Beaumont—a former asylum now serving as a sanctuary for the broken—a new, chilling enigma arrives. In 1953, a woman is discovered on the edge of the West Yorkshire moors: mute, shivering, and covered in blood. Labeled "Patient A," she carries no history, no name, and a terrifying silence that seems to vibrate with secrets. Enter Jane Galloway, a determined counsellor who refuses to accept the institutional apathy surrounding her new charge. Driven by an unorthodox empathy, Jane is desperate to coax the truth from Patient A’s locked lips. But as the investigation deepens, the line between healer and patient blurs. When a gruesome corpse is unearthed near the clinic, the whispers in the drafty corridors grow louder, tying the patient to a dark, unfolding crime. Fighting against a cold, rigid hierarchy determined to bury the truth alongside its patients, Jane must navigate a labyrinth of hidden agendas. The deeper she probes, the more she realizes that she is not just treating a memory-stolen woman, but unearthing a legacy of malice. In the suffocating atmosphere of The Beaumont, Jane must decide: is some silence worth protecting, or will the truth destroy them both?

Beautifully written

I could not get enough of this book. It was written exceptionally well. I have always been intrigued with asylums, hauntings and just learning about what patients have gone through. I would want to do the exact same thing as the counsellor Jane wants to do. I can’t imagine what the woman was/ had gone through. I thought Jane’s approach was much better than what the institution would want if she cannot get Patient A to speak about what happened the night she was found. This is a book that I’ll definitely be coming back to. I loved how L.K. wrote this. I couldn’t get enough of this story. I could go on and on but I don’t want to spoil it for anyone.

Enjoyable read

This is a gripping psychological thriller set in the eerie and atmospheric Beaumont mental hospital. In 1953, a woman, found naked, bloodied, and mute. She is then placed under the care of counsellor Jane Galloway. Known only as Patient A, she has no memory of her past prior to when she was found. Jane is determined to help her regain her voice. As Jane’s unorthodox methods clash with the hospital’s rigid hierarchy, whispers about a mysterious death surface. The whispers about this death ends up drawing Jane deeper into the enigma surrounding Patient A. The novel expertly uses dual timelines and multiple POVs. This gives readers a layered look into both Patient A’s traumatic past and Jane’s increasingly desperate investigation. The tension is palpable. The twists keep you guessing until the very end. The chilling, confined setting of the asylum, paired with the unraveling mystery, creates an atmosphere of dread that mirrors the characters' growing unease. While the book is compelling, it occasionally leans into familiar tropes of the genre, making some elements predictable. Still, the deeply immersive storytelling, complex characters, and haunting exploration of mental illness and institutional corruption make this a standout read. A solid four stars—this is a must-read for fans of dark, psychological suspense. I would read more from this author.

Awesome read

Wow this book was amazing !!! I was seriously hooked right from the first chapter of this book!! Clio was amazing I loved all the characters though even the characters that weren't in the story long. I loved how the author was so descriptive with the hospital and how I was literally transported there and felt like I was a patient in the dark and bleak halls. I mean the story was so well done and it flowed and I couldn't put this book down. I legit am still thinking about this read days later. I mean this was a powerful book ahhh I need more by this author now.

Perfect for spooky season

This book captivated me from the start. The author has a writing style that pulls you in, and before you know it, you read that book in one sitting. It has gothic vibes. I think the mental health representation was tastefully done. All the characters are so intense and full of layers and secrets. There are so many twists, turns, and secrets that if you think you figured it out, you most certainly did not. The author really did their homework on the mental institution time period and how patients were treated. It is very sad but also shows how far we have come. This is the perfect thriller for spooky season.

Highly recommend!

I absolutely loved this book! From the cover to the synopsis, I knew this book was right up my alley. I love anything to do with insane asylums and mental illness. When a woman is found naked, covered in blood, and unable to speak, she is brought to the asylum and dubbed as Patient A. Jane is a counselor who is employed to try and get the patient to talk and figure out her identity. Will Jane be able to figure out the identity of Patient A before it is too late, or will she go insane trying to figure it out? Is there something sinister going on within the halls of the asylum? Highly recommend!!
