Description

Samantha Cooper’s life has officially hit rock bottom. Within a single, disastrous day, she finds herself single, homeless, and trapped in an elevator with a stranger who claims to be a literal demon. Daphne is nothing like the terrifying entity Samantha imagined; she is sleek, witty, dressed in high-fashion pink, and entirely intoxicating. Daphne offers a tempting Faustian bargain: six wishes in exchange for Samantha’s soul. Samantha, desperate to win back her recent ex-girlfriend, agrees, fully intending to outsmart the contract and keep her soul intact. But Daphne has an agenda of her own. As a soul-collector nearing the end of her millenia-long sentence, she is determined to fulfill her quota. Each wish Samantha makes comes with a mischievous, life-altering twist, forcing her to rely on the demon again and again. As the line between supernatural manipulation and genuine connection blurs, Samantha starts to realize that chasing her past might be keeping her from a much more dangerous, delightful future. In this sharp, witty, and deeply romantic tale, two women discover that the person who might ruin your life is often the only one who truly understands it. It turns out, falling for the devil is a hell of a lot of fun.

a bedazzling tale

a bedazzling tale, fun and well written. A bit of a chess match between the main characters as they find their true selves.

I need more

I absolutely loved this story. I only wish they took a little bit more time falling for each other. And I wish the book was longer, but I enjoyed every minute.

Romance/ feelings build a little too quickly

Who hasn't seen "Bedazzled" starring Elizabeth Hurley and Brendan Fraser, or of course, the monkey's paw? The scenarios lovesick, dumped Samantha Cooper wishes for are delightfully, but unsurprisingly, twisted by demon Daphne. After six used wishes, Sam's soul is Daphne's. It's no surprise that the majority of Sam's wishes center around her ex-girlfriend and wanting to find a way to get back together - WITHOUT taking away Hannah's free will. I.e., no wishing Hannah would fall madly in love with her. What made the book maddening was 1) Sam's hard-headed lovesick obsession on centering it all around Hannah, 2) her inability to self-reflect and 3) I think the book itself mentioned it was about 12 hours had passed until the 5th wish? That's too soon to fall in love, I felt. But perhaps it's meant to be an extension of Sam's love-hard mindset... I did find some of the details of Daphne's life and employment interesting. I felt that could've been built upon more. However, I'm not sure I'll be willing to read a book set in this universe that explores that. I'm not interested to find out more about Daphne's and Sam's lives moving forward. A book I'm ok with. I'm glad I borrowed it from the public library instead of purchasing it, like I thought of doing.

four and a half stars

I must admit that Sam started annoying me around half way through. I almost gave up on the story. But a bit later it became unputdownable. Love Daphne. Eventually loved Sam. This was a clever story that I enjoyed a lot.

Devilish Good Time

Annabelle Bellefleur does it again. I fell in love with her romance novels since Written in the Stars. Her ability to create characters that jump off the page keeps you hooked. This story took a slightly different avenue. The romance is still there but with some supernatural elements that made it a sinfully delicious read. I will admit, I wasn’t as thrilled with the main character Sam at points. I won’t say too much without giving it away, but there were some times where I wanted to shake her. Still, the story had a fun premise with some tender, heart wrenching moments so I couldn’t put the book down until I reached the end. It’s been awhile since a book got me hooked to that extent.
