Description

Eloise Silver has spent her thirties chasing a breakout role that never seems to arrive, trading audition rooms for bit parts in soap operas and commercial gigs. Her career is stuck in a loop of mediocrity until the cultural zeitgeist shifts in the most unexpected way: the public develops a dark, global obsession with Estella Grant, a ruthless woman who has just seized control of Melbourne’s most formidable crime syndicate through a bloody coup. When the hit series Universe Below announces a new season centered on the mob boss’s rise to power, Eloise is unexpectedly thrust into the lead role. It is the career-defining opportunity she has craved for years, but there is a catch: to truly capture the soul of such a complex, terrifying figure, Eloise feels she must understand the woman behind the headlines. As Eloise goes to extreme lengths to infiltrate Estella’s inner circle, the line between her craft and her reality begins to blur. What starts as a desperate bid for industry relevance spirals into a high-stakes, volatile dance between an ambitious actor and a dangerous queenpin. In this spicy sapphic follow-up to Only Hope, the price of fame might just be a total surrender to the darkness.

At first, I wasn't sure if this story about a mob boss and a movie star was my cup of tea, but it didn't take long to discover that it was more than my cup of tea and more like a gigantic kettle of savory tea. The story is different than most romances, the sex is as hot as Melbourne in the summer, and the motivations, experiences and dynamics of the characters, mistressful!

Mafia Queen, yes please!

Honestly, i'm not even sure what to say about this book right now because i'm still processing everything. It was just sooo good!!! Ruby always has more than "just" a romance in her books, but the mafia plot was next level. And call me crazy, but Estella was the best. I really don't want to say tooo much about the story, because I don't want to give anything away, but OMG it was just so good. And the spice?! The spice?! She took that up a notch too in my opinion. As book 2 in the series I also loved getting glimpses into the lives of our favorite messy friend group and seeing how everyone is doing. She blended two separate stories seamlessly together and I ate it up. Obviously 5 stars.

Absolutely loved this book

One of my all time favorite sapphic stories. I have some suspicions about who it might be (very) loosely based on and finding out those are true is the only thing that could make it better. Twists and turns until the very end, expertly written dialogue that rarely felt clunky, the right balance of plot, smut, and character development. Cannot wait to read more from this author

Never a dull moment!

Classic RL: complex, fun plot and flawed, relatable characters. I loved both protagonists—conflicted for different reasons, with several twists to our understanding. Highly recommend!
