Description

For decades, Paul Rudnick has reigned as the undisputed king of the theatrical one-liner, masterfully blending high-brow intellect with an irreverent, sharp-tongued sensibility. This definitive collection gathers the most vital works of a playwright whose voice has become synonymous with the best of American comedy. From the supernatural whimsy of his Broadway debut, I Hate Hamlet, to the poignant, culturally defining ache of Jeffrey—a landmark exploration of love and survival during the AIDS crisis—these scripts pulse with the energy of a creator who refuses to choose between being profound and being hilarious. Whether he is deconstructing the absurdity of the entertainment industry or holding a mirror up to the complexities of identity and queer life, Rudnick deploys his signature wit like a laser. This anthology is far more than a simple retrospective; it is a masterclass in tone, timing, and the transformative power of laughter. For fans of theater, aspiring writers, and anyone who appreciates a perfectly turned phrase, these plays offer a front-row seat to the creative genius of one of our most nimble, audacious, and enduring humorists. It is a essential companion for those who believe that the funniest truths are often the most important ones.

reading vs seeing

His wit and alacrity with language prevail in these written versions of his plays. I wanted to see them because so many great lines, phrases and jokes go by at lightening speed when i've seen (only some of them) performed. I have to say, an actor's delivery brings it so much more to life, but still i've enjoyed revisiting his plots and writing.

Worth it for JEFFREY and VALHALLA--skip the rest

Worth buying for JEFFREY and VALHALLA, two very good plays and they're about something more than Rudnick's abundant wit. The others are wafer thin plots that just join one jokey gay bit to the next. The jokes are often good but, reading this whole collection, you're left with the bad taste of cleverness for its own sake. It's a shame Rudnick never challenged himself and just settled for writing about gay men as teenage girls. Like most of these plays, teenage girls can be initially funny and charming but you soon long for adult company.

A fun read

I'm in the process of reading the first play, and it is well written and very amusing. I'm happy with this purchase.
