Description

Archer is living the classic collegiate dream: he’s a hockey star with his sights set firmly on the NHL. But when his professional prospects start to look shaky, he realizes his life has become one-dimensional. That is, until a chaotic encounter at an animal rescue leaves him soaking wet and face-to-face with Leo, a brilliant, bespectacled puzzle who immediately turns his world upside down. Dressed in nothing but Archer’s spare team shirt, Leo is an undeniable distraction that proves impossible for the jock to ignore. For Leo, the attraction is just as magnetic, though far more complicated. Balancing a hesitant heart with the messy dynamics of a family already grappling with queer identity, Leo is wary of letting anyone in. He initially tries to keep things casual, but Archer is a relentless force who challenges him to stop playing it safe and start living for himself. As the two move from a bet to a genuine bond, they must navigate the pressure of the ice and the vulnerability of opening up. Set against a backdrop of holiday warmth and fierce team loyalty, this opposites-attract romance explores what happens when a rebel and a nerd decide to finally stop playing games and start building a future together.

Great start to a new series!

I loved Stick By Me by Christie Gordon. It's the first book in the Desert Ice Hockey series. I loved Archer and Leo's story. I loved how they met and that they are both verse. It made for some hot scenes. I loved getting to see more of the members of the Knot Me band since Leo is Axel's brother. And I loved that Archer's team is made up of all LGBTQ members. I did also love the twist with Archer's dad and that Leo was there to support him. I look forward to reading the next book in the series that should be about Jonah. I read this book using the Kindle unlimited app.

I'm not sure I can finish this...**update**

Okay, I managed to finish reading the book, but with the beginning plot holes, I'm still taking a star off. And changing his eye color actually really bothered me. But the overall story was fantastic. I have to say, I really love the way this author writes, I love her writing style. And the open communication between both characters was just so amazing and it was really heartwarming. I'm not sure if I'm going to continue the series considering it's not finished and I really love to binge, especially when I really like the author. But I'm definitely adding it to my list to be continued. And maybe by then I'll forget about the eye color lmao ------------------- After reading her first two series, I'm on the first book of this series and I'm not even a few chapters in and I'm already irritated. There are so many plot holes, cuz in the last series Asher's eyes were blue, now suddenly they're brown. And how is he rolling off his socks and then undoing his skates and taking them off... Like how can the guy put a glass that's empty and indicated as such, into the sink and then three or four sentences later suddenly has a half full glass that he's drinking out of again, where did this glass magically appear from and what happened to the glass in the sink that was empty?? There are so many plot holes. It's actually maddening and I don't know if I can continue the book... I'm going to try, but I'm not making any promises. Cuz I really want Leo and Archer to have their happily…

2.5 stars is all I can give really.

Top notes- This is a cute story without much angst which I was very happy about. Also, if you've read the author's previous series' )I have not) there does seem to be a lot of cute little nods to those and lots of previous characters' appearances. Mid notes- Lots of repetitive useless details used as filler. Makes and models of cars are repeated several times when the vehicle lends absolutely nothing to the story aside from transportation. Explanations that should be brief go into unnecessary detail to the point of almost feeling like 'mansplaining'. Additionally, a fair amount of grammatical issues. Commas being used in the wrong places or unnecessarily. The odd word missing or out of place a few times is one thing but this occurs more than a few times. The book could use a quick reread by an editor. Also, as another reviewer noted on another of the author's books there was an overuse of sniggered/snickered in that book. This one uses chortled to the point causing me to disdain the word by chapter 4 or so. Bottom notes- Here's where it gets to the problems that really took me out of the story. First, all of the characters seem to have generally the exact same personality type which is obviously frustrating. Leo and Archer are very gooey, to an almost sickening degree. All of the other characters seem to follow suit. This happens all the time whether during serious moments or sexy times or fun goofy times (far too few of these, as in none really.) The author could…

Good Audio Book in the Hockey Trope!

A good solid book. While I enjoyed the audio version of this book, it had some slow parts throughout the book. I like the nerd/jock trope. It had some very strong perspectives that are not always present in LGBTQ+ books. For example, a great idea to have a "squad" of out LGBTQ+ hockey players on a major college hockey team. The story flows well but does telegraph what is coming ahead. I do recommend the book if you are looking for a solid read or listen. I do believe that the book is better suited for the audio version.
