Description

Reese Marlowe has built a bulletproof career in the cutthroat world of sports journalism by adhering to a single, ironclad rule: never cross the line between reporter and athlete. It is a philosophy forged in the fires of a heartbreak she never fully recovered from, centered on one person: Dani Callahan. Fifteen years ago, Dani was the girl who got away, leaving Reese with nothing but unfinished business and a bitter lesson. Now, the stakes are higher than ever. Dani has transcended college stardom to become a professional hockey icon and the pride of Boston. When Reese is assigned to cover the team, the professional distance she has painstakingly maintained begins to crack. Being forced back into Dani’s orbit brings the past crashing into the present, revealing that the chemistry that once defined them hasn't faded—it has only deepened with age. As they navigate the tension of the locker room and the intimacy of long-delayed confessions, Reese is forced to confront a terrifying possibility. Is her hard-won professional stability worth more than a second chance at a once-in-a-lifetime love? In a world where reputations are fragile, Reese must decide if she is finally ready to stop skating around the truth and leave it all on the ice.

Second Chance, Slow Burn Romance

I’ve read a lot of books by Eliza Lentzski and simply love the way she tells a story. I don’t know a thing about hockey other than how hot Olympic champion Hilary Knight is, but this did give me something I do enjoy, second chances and slow burn. The two protagonists, Dani, a professional hockey player, and Reece, a sports reporter who moved to Boston to be a sideline reporter, were once in a relationship 15 years earlier. Reece was adamant about not dating any athletes, that is, until she succumbed to Dani’s persistence. They found themselves back in a hot and heavy relationship with some steamy scenes. (I don’t consider this disclosure to be a spoiler because it is, after all, a sapphic love story!) An important side to the romance was a little trans athlete, Charlotte, who loved playing hockey and only wanted to be able to play with her friends. The political climate was trending against this happening in the future, so Reece made it her mission to fight for the rights of these young athletes. I hope every reader enjoys this as much as I did. It doesn’t matter what the subject is because Eliza Lentzski is an excellent storyteller, and she didn’t disappoint.

Good

The first half was a bit of a struggle, it read kinda young and immature for two mid thirties professionals. The second half was redeeming and made it worth the read.

A beautiful romance with a beautiful message

I greatly enjoyed this story. Reese is a sports journalist from Boston who has returned home to cover women's sports leagues across the city. The first season she's covering is Hockey, and the Women's Hockey team is led by none other than Dani, the ex-girlfriend who Reese never really got over, and made her set a rule to never date athletes. This is a compelling romance as it builds, with enjoyable side characters, with one in particular highlighting a very important political message, which I was very happy to see handled so well. The trans sports debate is such an insane one to me, and far too many people capitulate into saying "oh it's complicated, let's just keep kicking the can down the road" and this author refuses to do that, acknowledging the truth that the only damage this "issue" causes is the harm done to trans people by keeping them banned.
