A Love Story Worth Rooting For—Full of Heart, Growth, and Chemistry
I started Shifting Gears right after reading James by Percival Everett, needing a bit of a palate cleanser—and this book was exactly what I needed. I read for escapism, and this story delivered a beautifully written, emotionally satisfying romance with engaging dialogue and characters I genuinely liked.
Dani and Nora’s journey is heartfelt and compelling, with chemistry that feels natural and authentic. What stood out to me most was Dani’s patience—while Nora struggled to find her path, Dani gave her the space she needed, offering support without pressure. That dynamic made their love story feel even more meaningful—it wasn’t just about attraction but about understanding and emotional growth.
After a recent book club discussion about the destructive effects of social media on the fabric of our society, this book took on even more significance. We doom-scroll through information custom to our biases, reinforcing deep divisions across race, class, and politics. Shifting Gears presents an alternative: a town that thrives on real, human connection. The town of Riverwalk, as described in the book, "...looks like it never quite left 1998." It’s a place where people work, play, and support one another, forming a true community. As Nora starts to fit in, it becomes clear that her happiness isn’t just about finding love—it’s about finding a place where people still genuinely show up for each other.
Beyond the romance, Shifting Gears explores deeper themes of personal identity,…
Small town romance where a CEO meets the local mechanic. It's a slow burner, but adorable how Nora is always trying to run into Dani all around town. Even more adorable that as confident the two were independantly, they were both too shy to ask the other out. It was a cute read, for sure.

Cute, pleasant and beautiful sapphic slow- burn romance. I really enjoyed it. Dani - she was just perfect and Nora - brilliant and interesting. They fit together perfectly.
Hallmark movie vibes are strong in this book which was great. A big city CEO comes to a small town and falls in love with a local mechanic. And they are both women! That is just what I needed.
This book is a slow burn but soooo worth it! The story still kept me interested and the build up was insane.
