Description

It is never too late to begin your true life. In She Loves Her, editor Judith Yahav gathers fifteen deeply moving and candid accounts from women who chose to step out of the shadows and embrace their identities, often decades into their adult lives. These stories shatter the myth that sexuality is etched in stone at a young age, proving instead that self-discovery is a lifelong journey. Through these intimate confessions, readers meet a diverse cast of women—from those navigating the complex aftermath of divorce and difficult conversations with children, to those who experienced their first romantic awakening well into their sixties. The narratives are as varied as the women themselves: some lived dual lives to survive social pressures, while others found themselves surprised by love later in life in ways they never anticipated. This collection is a powerful testament to the resilience of the human heart. Each chapter confronts the crushing weight of societal shame and the liberation that comes with radical honesty. Whether you are questioning your own path or simply looking for inspiration, She Loves Her offers a profound look at the courage it takes to abandon long-held expectations in pursuit of authentic, love-filled freedom.

Long overdue stories

It’s a well-known truism that the older a woman gets, the more invisible she becomes. This is even more true the further she sits from the heteronormative ideal: if she is not cis, or straight, or if she is fat, an immigrant, or a woman of color. That invisibility is exactly what makes a collection like this feel so necessary. In She Loves Her, Judith Yahav offers a glimpse into the lives of women we rarely get to see or hear (not even in fiction) by giving them space to tell their own stories in their own voices. That alone is powerful. Most queer narratives still center men. And while there are now (thankfully) many coming-out and love stories for younger generations, the women who came before, and who had far fewer options, are often overlooked. Within that group, women who only came to live openly as women who love women later in life are, in a sense, doubly erased. Though these stories exist everywhere in real life, they rarely get written down. This book helps correct that. What a special gift this collection turned out to be! Also unique to this book is the specific backdrop of Israel: immigration (whether willing or not), military and kibbutz life, the layering of languages and ethnic identities, tensions between religious and secular worlds, and the presence of Palestinian life within the Zionist project. Not everything is explored in depth, and much is left unexplored, but as these are personal narratives, not a comprehensive analysis, that feels okay. Bottom…

Sidelined experiences of women's love and desire for women

So glad that this book is now out in English! It is a trailblazing, candid treasure chest of untold lives: Older women narrating their searches and discoveries, their belated recognition or expression of desire and love for women. In Judith Yahav's She Loves Her a cohort that has been overlooked, ignored and sidelined now speaks out.

Avid lesbian reader

It is always interesting to read a story of a woman choosing passion, desire, and creativity over more traditional forms of life. In this collection of 15 coming out stories of Israeli lesbians, Judith Yahav brings to life the multiple nuances of this story in the context of contemporary Israel, where women tell the story of returning to themselves in the face of a complex traditional, militaristic, often tribal, traumatized, at times modern, society. The stories span diverse backgrounds and circumstances. A fascinating and deeply moving read - highly recommend!

Judith has been able to skillfully interview women who love women so as they can candidly share their process of choosing to come out of the closet. This is a wonderful moving book that deals authentically with a process in unchartered waters. Highly recommended
