Um....where tf has this book been? Not in my recommendations for some stupid reason. Looking at you Amazon. I had to dig to stumble across it.
Is it the best written from a technical standpoint? Well, no, it's well written, but I could point out areas for improvement. Does it have the steamiest sex scenes perhaps? Hot, with a hint of kink, but that's not the lure here.
Character development and arcs? Plot? Dialog? All of those are strong, yes...
But what makes this book stand out is that is it's just plain fun!
Pirates of Aletharia is a powerful return to classic pirate fantasy adventure that is so hard to find theses days, and almost impossible to find at all with multiple strong female characters in the lead.
This is a book with no heroes, which also makes it unique and riveting. Everyone is a villian and can't seem to go more than a couple chapters without stabbing someone they either hate, love, like, or are apathetic towards but they need something from.
The weaving together of adventure, romance, emotional journeys, humor, and good old swashbuckling rum soaked bloodletting is never at any point boring. I couldn't set this down and read it in one sitting, and am eager for more.
If you are looking for a one off, save this for when you're ready for a series, it's quite clearly the set up for far more to come.
I sitting here hoping book two exists, but I'd honestly be happy to read anything else by this author too if I can get my hands on it.

Argh! Yo ho, yo ho, a Pirates’ life for me!
Ahoy me mateys! This is a pirate journey filled with women who would make Sappho proud. Cheers Britney Jackson! I love the characters who inhabit this world. I can’t wait til book 2 to see what happens next. A big shout out to narrator Lindsey Dorcus who brings the story to life. Lindsey I love your accents and the emotions you bring to all the pirates. The story hits the ground running and this is a thrill ride worthy of Disney, except even better with a Magic Kingdom filled with powerful women.

Deadly pirates, lusty women, crusty sailors, lethal smugglers, villainous - uh - villains, witchcraft, sapphic sex, fire snorting dragons, deception, seduction, seduction, I mentioned seduction, right?
In a triumph of complementary psychopathology, a secretive dragon sorceress and a suspicious pirate captain, both with bounties on their heads and both damaged by having been ensnared, betrayed, and tortured by the same woman, join forces and body parts to... not entirely sure what, because that's where the book ended, but I assume the sequel will include fighting the evil empire together. With dragons.
This engaging romance/adventure grabbed me in the first paragraph and I read it in one sitting. One reclining, actually, because that's how I roll. I'm reaching for book two of the series now.
What a great pirate adventure!
OMG! A FAVORITE! I LOVE THIS BOOK! Captain Maria Welles didn't trust her new surgeon Em (Emilia Drakon). Em is keeping a secret, she's a dragon sorcerer or witch. She has a bounty on her head for escaping the gallows.
This wonderful story is about how the two women go from distrusting and hating each other to finally falling in love . But is it too late, read bk 2 to find out! I know. I will! Worth more than 5 stars!
