Description

Lydia’s life was mapped out long before she had a say in the matter. As the daughter of a decorated admiral desperate to stay ahead of the encroaching Great Rexone empire, she is merely a pawn in a political game, destined for an arranged marriage that secures her father’s power. But Lydia possesses a rebellion in her soul that no admiral can command. Refusing to be traded like cargo, she escapes—only to land in the unlikely custody of The Night Spirits, a band of pirates as infamous as they are ruthless. A desperate bargain grants her safe passage, but the sea has a way of complicating one's plans. As she navigates the volatile tides, she finds herself anchored by Laufitu, the crew’s indomitable second-in-command. Amidst daring raids on her father’s allies and the thrill of life beyond the empire's reach, a fierce, unexpected love begins to bloom between the two women. Yet, the horizon holds more than just romance. When tragedy forces a reckoning, Lydia learns the dark, hidden truth behind The Night Spirits’ piracy. Suddenly, she must choose: preserve the comfortable lies of her birthright or fight for a future forged in the fires of liberation.

Very well done!

I originally was a beta reader for this book, and then was also gifted an ARC. Lalock did an awesome job taking what I, and I’m sure other beta readers, suggested, and editing. I loved reading about pirates when I was younger, so this was perfect. My favorite book was “Pirates” by Celia Rees. And if anyone loves that one, but wanted a Sapphic twist - this is the perfect book for you. The characters are very well written, and will draw you into the story. Lydia is naive but kind, and her growth through out the book is wonderful. Laufitu is perfectly strong and admirable and gorgeous. I found myself not being able to put it down until I finished the whole book. This book has it all - Escapes from forced marriages, sword fights, love, passion, humor, pirates, bargains, and a great ending. You won’t be disappointed if you pick this one up. I recommend it!

Good pirate story

I enjoyed this story. The romance was without a ton of angst and the ending was quite satisfying. The lessons written in on the evils of colonization were a nice part of the story. However, I wish the author would edit for run-on sentences; they mar an otherwise very good book.

enjoyed this immensely

It was a fun little story, if I had to complain, I’d say I wished more from the pirates perspective and not just the MC. That and maybe a little more building between them. But those are quibbles, it was refreshing to see a main be stubborn enough to keep going and not break, but also not giving her super powers, just dumb luck at times, and the ability to take advantage of those who wrote her off. Honestly I’d like to read a whole book on the fallout and the situation hinted at in the epilogue!

Will read again

This book was a quick read, although not a boring one. The way the author tells their story left me wanting more. Absolutely in love with Laufitu and Lydia’s beginnings!
