Poignant, incredible MM romance debut
“Our love is a cipher. It cracks me open and lays bare the immensity of my heart.”
Overall: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ / 5
Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️ / 5
I read this to prep for book two in the series, Scoring the Player, and because it’s been on my TBR since I saw and fell in love with the stunning special edition hardcover available for preorder for Queers & Quills 2025. Anyway, I’m so glad I did because I am head over heels in love with Sid, Ty, and this incredible, talented debut author.
Grey has a talent for immersing the reader in poignant human emotion, weaving intricate and believable personalities, and compassionately portraying trauma and recovery. This story is told entirely from Ty’s perspective. He’s a flawed, damaged character whose story starts with an incredibly powerful first chapter.
As all broken characters are, he’s an unreliable narrator at times. He’s young, driven, immature, passionate, and desperate in turn. In many ways, Sid is his polar opposite. But the similarities they share catch fire and bring so much life to the page.
Sid and Ty are surrounded by interesting and fully-developed side characters who help drive the angsty and character-driven plot. While, yes, there’s plenty of pro ball and lots of court time, the relationship and the emotional growth and evolution of our leads is by far the primary focus in Loving the Legend.
Grey’s prose is thoughtful and complex. This is a phenomenal debut novel, though, in some ways, Grey’s newness shows. We spend a lot of time with…

Tyler and Sidney are both basketball players. Sid is a veteran and Ty is a rookie. They meet at an interview Ty’s rookie year after Ty beats the point record Sid set his own rookie year. After the interview, they exchange phone numbers and start casually texting. They become close when Sid invites Ty home for Christmas. Ty doesn't have anyone to spend it with since his Uncle has to work and his parents died his senior year of high school.
Ty develops a huge crush on Sid and realizes he’s gay, but assumes that Sid is straight. He focuses on just being friends with Sid, but he decides that he needs to hook up with a someone to try and get Sid out of his system. He finds someone at any party that both he and Sid are attending. However, Sid notices and tells him if he needs someone to have sex with, he’s available. After that night, the two are inseparable.
"Loving the Legend" is a captivating and heartwarming story that portrays the romantic journey of two men, Ty and Sid, who are at different stages of their basketball careers. The tale is an exquisite blend of sweet and steamy moments that will make your heart flutter and your toes curl. The palpable chemistry between Ty and Sid is evident right from the moment they meet during their shared interview. As the story progresses, their connection deepens, and they fall for each other, making it clear that they are meant to be together.
The Christmas scenes are beautifully written, and you can feel the warmth and love that the…
“I’ll love you through whatever you’re battling. Always show me the real you, and I’ll do the same.”
This novel is a masterpiece in the beauty of allowing yourself to be truly seen and how incredibly difficult that can be.
A palpable grief takes hold of you early on and stays with you, ebbing and flowing in its intensity as the characters bend, break, and work to heal. It’s a rare gift to have a witty, entertaining, romance, filled with rich lovable characters, but that still takes the reader on a journey of processing loss, navigating mental illness, and unpacking shame that can color one’s very existence.
I rooted for Ty & Sid from page one and only grew more invested with every part of themselves they laid bare.
All this AND toe-curling spice, driven by a chemistry that was burning up the pages.
The audio book, brought to life by Jace Hunter, is a wholly new experience. An already emotional, captivating, and immersive novel is given breath and a new depth- forcing you to step back and bear witness to Tyler Washington and Sidney King in all their glory. Jace was spectacular and imbued authenticity and a lived-in feel into every word. A breathtaking performance.
Five stars for both the novel and the audiobook. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Unexpected, but delicious sucker punch
I did not see that suckerpunch coming. I read the blurb and knew where the story could take me, but I was wholly unprepared for the depth and intensity of emotions that would flood me! Ty's emotions and struggles were so impeccably portrayed on page that I "felt" every single thing he did. The author did a splendid job telling a story of a hurt, imperfect man trying to make it and make it count. I loved his relationship with Sid and how it bloomed from an emotional connection, rather than just a physical attraction.
The only thing I'd love to see above what the author delivered in this stunning book, was Sid's POV. I was very intrigued by him and his wholesome focus on wellbeing of both himself and the people around him. I'd love to poke around his head some more.
All in all though, the author definitely joins my "to observe" list and I will look forward to more stories from them!
Friends…this story is nothing that I was expecting and everything that I love about being surprised by when picking up a book.
You can tell right off that the friendship between Ty and Sid is going to be different. They have this immediate connection that is so simplistic in nature because it just IS. Watching them cultivate and grow into something so deeply intimate - first as friends and then more just pulled at my heart the entire book.
There are hurdles - They’re both coming to terms with their trauma and Ty is learning how to love himself and in turn, let himself be loved by others. And the way Sid loves...Idk man, I think he might be my book husband. How do I at least become his best friend? He is the man they're talking about when they say 'books give women high expectations' bc if a man in real life isn't saying to me "our family will find refuge in our union" then I.Don't.Want.Him. This isn’t just 2 people falling in love, this is the sigh of relief in knowing you found the soul who complements your own.
This is a sports romance, and there's a lot of basketball talk. It plays a big part in the storyline, obviously - but don’t let that deter you. The sportsball is intertwined with story and character development - so for me, a non-sportsball person, it didn’t seem like too much. There's literally nothing I didn't love about this book...it's found family at its best, the mental health rep is so realistic and relatable, the characters are people I wish I knew in…
