Description

Gemma O’Brien lives a life defined by tight control. As a sober lobster boat captain responsible for her volatile younger sister, she has zero room for chaos—and definitely no time for her best friend’s meddling. When her business is suddenly thrust into the orbit of Forage and Trawl, a high-end restaurant with a demanding new head chef, Gemma’s carefully structured world begins to tilt. Kay Grammar is equally focused, though for drastically different reasons. Having narrowly escaped a toxic professional past, she is pouring every ounce of her energy into her dream restaurant. She is determined to bury her insecurities under flawless service and perfect plates, leaving no space for the magnetic, salt-of-the-earth captain who keeps crossing her path. For two women who pride themselves on discipline, Gemma and Kay are a recipe for friction. They operate in different worlds—one on the unpredictable, rough Atlantic, the other in the precise, pressurized kitchen—but in their small town, avoiding each other is impossible. As the heat of the restaurant’s grand opening rises, the professional barrier begins to crack. To find something real, they’ll have to move past their guarded walls and decide if they’re brave enough to stop just surviving and start truly living.

Delightful. Opposites attract.

Gemma is a sturdy butch who captains her own lobster boat in Maine. She has a crass mouth, is a recovering alcoholic and has a big heart. Kay is a curvy, talented chef who loves bold colors. Kay is on the verge of opening a new restaurant and meets Gemma when she comes in to talk about being her lobster supplier. From the delightful first meeting sparks are flying between the two. I love that they are not conventionally attractive but they are absolutely attracted to each other. This is a short novel at only 218 pages and it goes fast. No last moment break ups. It goes from sharing a meal to sharing a bed at the lesbian speed of light. The characters are endearing and I wish I could have had more time with them. They are opposites in their lives and even in their work schedules. But you know they will figure it out. The side characters bring some complexity to the story but the Captain and Chef are the stars. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this story. One side note. The cover is nice and appealing but looks nothing like the descriptions of either of the main characters. When authors embrace a MC with curves and softness the cover should reflect it. This is the third novel I’ve read from the author and I have enjoyed everyone. (4.5 Stars)

Good Read

I received an ARC copy of this book from the Publisher via Netgalley and voluntarily leaving my review. Gemma is struggling to grow her business as she deals with staying sober something she couldn’t do in the past as she help her sister with her own problems. Kay is a chef who is also restaurant owner who still struggles with trauma from a past job where she was constantly criticized and made to doubt herself. Gemma and Kay meet when discussing business with Dina and Eric and they clash but then as they start working together they challenge each other in a way that help them both. This was such a good read I like that Gemma and Kay communicate and wasn’t any misunderstanding love the growth both characters have.
