Description

After the devastating loss of her husband, thirty-two-year-old Clara is left to navigate a world that feels increasingly hollow. Struggling to build an authentic life, she decides it is time to stop hiding the person she has always been inside. Leaving her past and her former self behind, Clara embarks on an unapologetic journey of self-discovery, fueled by the hope of finally stepping into the light as her true self. But the road to transition is rarely a straight line. As Clara moves through the messy, exhilarating, and often hilarious realities of life, she finds that finding one's wings requires more than just courage; it requires letting go of the expectations others placed upon her. This is not just a story of gender exploration, but a vibrant exploration of finding beauty in the wreckage of a broken life. With a perfect balance of humor, grit, and emotional depth, this narrative captures the universal longing to be seen. Whether she is tackling awkward social encounters or embracing the joy of her newfound identity, Clara’s evolution is both heart-wrenching and deeply inspiring. It is a heartfelt reminder that even after the hardest fall, it is never too late to learn how to fly.

A wonderful story about discovering your real self……..

This is a truly wonderful book. The author uses well defined and very real characters to illustrate how we each suffer in our way, and how with help from a good friends we can push through adversity to discover who we really are. How sometimes it takes a different perspective to help us focus on what is real in our lives so that we can learn how to cope with the world and begin to define not just how the world affects us, but more importantly how we relate to the people in our lives. And learn how to take control over who we want to be. The author shows us that along the way to finding ourselves, that perhaps we can help others around us learn more about themselves and about how they deal with us and our differences. As a transgender woman, I found the path to discovery for not just Max, but also for Taylor to be enlightening. I would recommend this book to anyone - once I started reading it, I found myself unable to put it down. The only bad thing about the book was how surprised I was when it suddenly came to an end. I can only hope that a sequel will be published soon! The story is much too good to end here.

goodness, heartbreaking, wonderful

Oh I don’t think I know where to begin. It’s a dark story that gets overly complicated (in the book, not the book) and a lot of happiness and angst as well! Read it!

Great characters, but a slow start

I want to start off by saying I really enjoyed this book and can't wait for the next one. The dual POVs are done really well with each feeling very different from the other. Max and Taylor are both very different people and their perspectives are shown clearly in their POV chapters. The side characters are equally as well developed. Avery, Willa, Eddie, Garret and Clay all add a lot to the story. The story does a great job dealing with gender issues, sexuality, and has great romantic tension between the leads. My only real complaint is the book takes far too long setting up the initial premise. It's a Rube Goldberg device of set up to get Maxwell to be Maxine. It takes roughly half the book to basically strong arm Maxwell into having to be Maxine for the coming school year. It's one thing after another after another. It starts to feel ridiculously contrived and leads to the setup stealing focus from much more interesting and important things going on in the book. That being said, it's still a fun read with great characters and I'll be thrilled when the next book comes out!
