Description

Princess Eliza has spent eighteen years waiting for a rescue that never came. Locked away in a witch’s solitary tower, she has traded the typical fairy-tale dreams of youth for a vast library and a quiet, lonely resilience. Now past thirty and long forgotten by the kingdom that once hoped to claim her, she has made peace with her isolation—until the iron door finally creaks open. Enter Sir Kaylen, a world-weary knight who took this suicide mission out of sheer financial desperation. Expecting a legendary beast, she instead finds a sharp-witted woman who has been anything but a damsel in distress. The mismatched pair must embark on a treacherous trek across monster-infested lands to return home, but the physical dangers of the wilderness quickly pale in comparison to the complex reality of the kingdom awaiting them. As the lines between rescuer and rescued begin to dissolve, a smoldering, forbidden attraction takes root. In a world where duty often demands sacrifice, Kaylen and Eliza must decide if they are willing to rewrite their own stories. This slow-burn, steamy sapphic adventure subverts classic tropes to ask the ultimate question: can a knight who was only meant to deliver a princess instead choose to keep her?

I love that these are only one book series. Definitely a good book to read

Feels weird to knock a star off for being merely very good.

This is pretty much exactly the book I expected from the title of the series. If this was the first book I'd be beyond satisfied. But since, especially in retrospect, the first book was like a revelation that did so many things I didn't expect and all of them in ways I like, my expectations weren't matched to a well crafted and satisfying book about the premise. It's just a matter of personal taste, I relate to being evil in my 20s more than doing well by my family in my 30s (so far.) There are a couple of cool wrinkles and nuance and everything works, but this book feels a lot more conventional to me in its structure, conflict, dynamics and how characters relate to each other. I fell in love with both protagonists in the first one, and this one is more like hearing about how a couple of personal friends who you really personally like got together. That's pretty much good for them, happy it happened. Smiled a few times but I'm not consistently giddy.
