Description

Daniela Da Costa is a basketball powerhouse whose professional legacy is currently being sidelined by constant tabloid fodder regarding her messy love life. Desperate to pivot her reputation and salvage a failing season, she lands a fresh start with the Jersey Jaguars—only to discover that her new teammate is the one person she never wanted to see again: her long-lost flame, Perry West Reiss. Perry, the stoic heart of the struggling Jaguars, has built a thick wall around her personal life to escape the baggage of her past. To save their team from a disastrous downward spiral, the two rivals strike an uneasy bargain: a high-stakes fake-dating arrangement designed to boost morale and silence the critics. But as they step into the limelight, the lines between performance and reality begin to blur. Amid the high-pressure environment of professional sports and the constant scrutiny of the public eye, Daniela and Perry are forced to confront the old wounds they left behind. Can they overcome their conflicting red flags and deep-seated insecurities to forge a winning path, or will the weight of their complicated history cost them everything? Half Court Shot is a sizzling, emotional journey about redemption, reconciliation, and the courage to take a final, desperate chance on love.

This One Gave Me Happy Tears

Half Court Shot by Kimani Mae was such a joy to read. I thoroughly enjoyed this book from start to finish. It had the perfect balance of humor and heart — I found myself laughing out loud in some moments and tearing up (happy tears!) by the end. What really stood out to me was the character development. Daniela’s growth throughout the story felt authentic and satisfying. Watching her come into herself was beautiful. Perry’s development was just as strong, and I loved seeing how both of them evolved individually and together. The writing was engaging, warm, and easy to fall into. This is absolutely a must-read for me. I’m officially invested and now I need more from Kimani Mae!

All Hail Second Chance Slow Burns

Warning: Spoilers Ahead I really enjoyed it! It combined my favorite tropes: second chance, fake dating, sports and some good angst with a happy ending. I love when characters yearn for a bit and they reach a moment when they just HAVE to let go and give in to what they’re feeling. ALL HAIL SLOW BURNS! I felt terrible about how much Perry’s relationship with her mom affected her everyday life. To have her mom be the type of person that you tremble and sweat when you see them reach out, I felt so bad for her. As little as I know about OCD, I appreciated the representation and the portrayal of the many different ways OCD can manifest in a person. Danny was just a flirt, still pining after her high school crush and the one that got away. I appreciated that the expectation placed on more masc presenting women in relationships with more femme presenting women was spoken about within the story. I might have developed a crush on Daniela, sue me. I loved the interactions we got to see with the team. I hope to read the stories of some of the other players and I would adore to read Rashida and Allison’s story. Thank you to Kimani Mae for providing me with an eARC.

Another Different Take On Love and 🏀

Imagine this, the innocent girl crush you left behind with no explanation ends up being the potential saving grace for your father’s struggling WNBA team? What could possibly go wrong?! Half Court Shot was beautifully written and a testament to love always finding a way. I enjoyed it from start to finish. I’d be so interested in hearing more of Danny and Perrys story or even the stories of other teammates! With all the new eyes on women’s basketball, love stories like these are needed.

Sapphic, sporty, and (un)surprisingly sweet!

I love a good debut novel and this one had such a fun concept. Technically a second chance focus but a different take on it than I’ve read in the past. I expected to have fun (and did) but I didn’t know I would also feel personally represented in some of the diagnoses the MCs experience. And I certainly didn’t expect to cry twice! Timed this perfectly because I finished it on release day (even though basketball is year-round)! I received a copy of this book directly from the author and this is my honest review. 4.5 stars. Just what I needed during Black History Month.
