I’m not a big football (aka soccer) fan, however I can tell that Clare Lydon definitely is. And for this reason I think her best books are the football themed ones because the passion for the sport and the characters comes shining through. And although I’m not a huge football fan, this book just may be my favorite of hers. I loved the characters and the friends to enemies to lovers trope and it didn’t matter one bit that I was a little lost on the football talk 🤣 Well done!

Well-crafted slow burn romance set against a soccer tournament
Normally enemies-to-lovers isn’t my favorite trope, but I wasn’t going to pass on one of Clare Lydon’s books. The "enemies" aspect quickly gave way to more of a slow-burn romance, which I very much enjoyed.
The book obviously has a strong sports element, which I liked a lot. It certainly appeared to me that the author understands soccer inside and out, and I felt as if I got an opportunity to see behind the scenes of professional teams. The romantic tension between the two characters mirrors the tension on the pitch, and it’s really well done.
The soccer element, along with the mystery of what had actually caused the rift between Amy and Jen, did a lot to keep the story interesting. After all, in a romance novel, the big question — will the main characters get together? — is pretty much a foregone conclusion, and the only mystery is how and when. But the outcome of the tournament and the cause of the animosity between Amy and Jen are not at all obvious until later in the book.
I didn’t realize when I started this book that it takes place in the same "universe" as The Princess Match, one of my all-time favorite Clare Lydon books. The main characters from that book — Ash and Princess Victoria — are minor characters here, and I enjoyed getting to see them again. A few other characters from that book are mentioned as well. However, reading The Princess Match is absolutely not required to follow this story.
The only suggestion I would have, if there are more books to come in…
Girlfriend Goals draws you into the lives of two rival women's football managers with a shared chilly past and a soon to be heated up future, on and off the pitch.
Jen, England manager, is forced to interact with Amy, Ireland manager, for a documentary promotion of the sport. Having once been best friends a lifetime ago, the two had fallen out of favor and not spoken since their early teammate days as young footballers at the start of their careers.
Great characters, great story, and one that you'll enjoy beginning to end. Another score for Clare Lydon!
