A beautifully written tale of healing, love, and the courage to start anew
“Between the stars and the sea, I found a story that broke me and put me back together.”
This book left me in tears—soft, aching ones that come from watching two broken souls find solace in each other. It's a slow-burn romance that gently unfolds, allowing the characters' pain and healing to resonate deeply.
Synopsis:
Ethan Hosking seizes a harrowing opportunity to escape his abusive relationship by walking into a raging bushfire, leaving his old life behind. Emerging as Aubrey Hobbs, he carries only his grandfather's telescope and a fragile hope for a new beginning. Guided by the Southern Cross, he arrives at Hadley Cove, a secluded town on Kangaroo Island.
Patrick Carney, the lighthouse keeper of Hadley Cove, has lived in solitude since the tragic loss of his lover four years prior. His life is a quiet routine, shared only with a tabby cat and the vast ocean. When Aubrey arrives, Patrick's world is gently disrupted, and a connection forms between two men scarred by their pasts.
Spoilers Ahead:
As Aubrey and Patrick's bond deepens, secrets loom. Aubrey's past, particularly his relationship with a powerful ex-boyfriend, threatens the fragile peace they've found. When the truth surfaces, the strength of their connection is tested. Yet, through vulnerability and trust, they navigate the storm, proving that love can be a beacon in the darkest times.

Heartfelt, emotional love story
How to summerize this truly heartfelt, emotional love story? It was just plain beautiful.
Galaxies and Oceans speaks about two lost men finding their way in uncharted waters following the stars.
Aubrey escapes his past, his abusive ex by pretending to be lost to a bushfire. He follows the stars to a secluded island, to a small town to settle in peace. He just wants a life without pain and maybe a small chance at happiness.
Patrick lives in that said small town. He's lived there for years now tending to the lighthouse on the shore of the Southern Ocean. His solitary life is lonely and sad spent grieving a man lost forever. But he starts to feel things he hadn't felt in a long time when a stranger shows up in his town.
The two broken men in this story find peace, redemption and happiness in each other. It is beautifully written how they work through their baggage of past traumas to open up to something rather beautiful and pure. The small gestures, the slow but powerful pace of their falling for each other was simple but all-consuming at once.
There is something beautiful in the simplicity of normalcy. How an average life can be the most perfect thing to someone who hasn't known it for a long time.
The symbolism of the stars and the ocean, the wastness of both, the unyielding power that they represent, the beauty and rage they are capable of. They were the perfect representation of our two MC.
The emotional journey was amazing in this book but at the same time it was…

A beautiful story about healing in different ways
This was my third time reading/listening to this book, and I’m sure it won’t be the last. It’s heartbreaking, but so so beautiful as well. I’ve loved every N.R Walker book I’ve read, but this one is very special, and might have some of the prettiest writing she has done. The imagery and world she has managed to create in this book is just stunning.
Both MCs are incredibly easy to love, and I wanted them to be happy together basically from the first time they interacted. One MC is a widower and has to deal with the guilt of moving on (very tastefully done, I will say), while the other has been the victim of domestic abuse for a very long time. To say they have some hurdles to overcome is an understatement, but they both deserve to be happy. The author handled both of these topics with a lot of care and sensitivity, and it paid off. Beautiful characters and a beautiful story. Highly recommend.
It also has one of the prettiest covers ever.
Galaxies and Oceans is stellar; easily a top read for me. It’s vying for top place on my NR Walker pyramid of favorites. It’s so good, y'all; I’m not sure why it’s not mentioned more. The life Patrick leads is my dream life. Works a few hours in the morning managing a lighthouse on a tiny island, watches penguins in the afternoon while rescuing hot dudes. It's sad, romantic, healing, lovely, and pretty are all words I would use to describe this book.
Are there any N.R.Walker's books I don't love?
The answer is No.
I bought and read all of her books, and love them so much.
Each story has left something in my memories, some in physical things.
(like I bought a lot of songs during and after reading Spencer Cohen's story, I studied more about Australia's Geographic Information from Red Dirt Heart, or looking more for Butterflies from Imago)
This story is no exception.
N.R.Walker has a very nice sense in choosing her book's title.
They are beautiful and always made me want to know where they came from..like, their background.
Galaxies and Oceans
You may think it's just the representative of places, or in my case the personality.
But it's so much more.
There are huge depth and background behind the title.
You will feel it completed when you reached the last word of the book.
I don't know how she can always do like this.
Even the story is so stressful, so tense, she still manages to make us feel enough love, enough warmth, enough hope in every step of the movement.
Patrick and Aubrey are another wonderful characters.
They have their own hard background but they were brought together in the most romantic way possible.
The Southern Cross...
wow...just...wow...
How could you think of that, Ms.Walker?
I am always kind of Water person, so Seas-Oceans are my things.
But now, I got more and more curious about the constellation.
I think I will study more about them.
If you want to read a book that will leave you…
