Description

The eccentric inhabitants of 28 Barbary Lane return in this darkly comedic installment of Armistead Maupin’s iconic San Francisco saga. Life at the city’s most storied address is anything but quiet as the lives of our favorite bohemians collide with mystery, obsession, and the search for genuine connection. The ever-enigmatic Anna Madrigal finds her peaceful sanctuary disrupted by an impulsive act that leaves a prominent television anchorwoman held captive in her basement. Meanwhile, the perpetually hopeful Michael Tolliver trades the comforts of home for the dusty thrill of the National Gay Rodeo in pursuit of romance. Farther afield, the spirited duo of DeDe Halcyon Day and Mary Ann Singleton embark on a harrowing trek across the frozen expanse of Alaska, locked in a desperate game of cat-and-mouse with a charming yet lethal predator. Amidst the chaos, the introspective Prue Giroux grapples with the complexity of love as she loses her heart to a mysterious recluse haunting the local park. Woven with Maupin’s signature wit and deep empathy, this novel explores the fragile boundaries between past transgressions and future redemptions. It is a vibrant, suspenseful portrait of chosen family navigating the unpredictable, often dangerous rhythms of life in the big city.

Absolutely charming

The 3rd book and the series and it keeps getting better and better. This is page turner is full of suspense, fun, and loving characters. We can only want more and more. This series continues to make me fall in love with its story and characters. Not to mention the twists and turns and the comebacks and 28 Barbary Ln. And of course Mrs Madrigal.

LOVE the book-pissed at amazon!

I read the first three "Tales" books, but cannot continue with the rest of my Maupin series purchases, as book 4 ("Babycakes") is unavailable! I read these books when they first came out and fell in love with the author, his writing, characters, twists and turns. When I saw amazon had them (finally!), I purchased the whole set (or at least THOUGHT I did) only to find after reading the first three books that the 4th was missing! So YES, love the books, but this is my way of venting about how I don't like amazon for messing up my reading summer!

Complicated plot!

But a lot of fun and, of course, an amazing and wonderful conclusion. Made me anxious to read more of the series.

Got hooked on this series

A year ago when I was thinking about relocating to the SF area, I picked up the first book in this series, got hooked, and bought the entire series. It made me fall even more in love with the city I knew I had to be a part of. I year later, I do work in SF and live very close by (rental market in SF is a whole other story - if only Mrs. Madrigal had a place available!!). Light, fun reads - I really enjoyed the entire series.

Good, good good.

Of course it continues to be good. Maupin puts some of himself into these stories and you can feel the emotion. These are the original Sex in the City, except with a more diverse cast of characters and each character has so much more depth. I don't know why I waited so long to finally read the whole series (I did see a couple of the televised episodes but am not much of a tv watcher so missed most of them--and damn, Netflix doesn't have them!).
