Description

The year is 1848, and the California Gold Rush beckons with the promise of fortune and a new beginning. For Clem and Kizzy Dennison, the westward journey is more than just a search for riches; it is a precarious dance of deception. Posing as a married couple, the two women navigate the treacherous Oregon Trail, masking their identities and their burgeoning intimacy behind the safety of a convenient arrangement. Clem, a stoic and pragmatic writer who has spent her life hiding in plain sight, finds her carefully constructed world upended by her spirited, impulsive wife. While Kizzy’s zest for life leads them into encounters with legendary frontiersmen and unlikely mentors, the harsh realities of the trail—from deadly illness to ruthless claim jumpers—threaten to shatter their fragile alliance. As their bond deepens amidst the dust and danger of the plains, both women find themselves falling for the one person they believe is only committed to the partnership until the gold is found. Bound by a secret marriage and a shared destination, Clem and Kizzy must navigate the fine line between survival and vulnerability. Can they risk their hearts to turn a necessary lie into a permanent truth, or will the perils of the frontier keep them forever separated by silence?

LOVE the two spirit and indigenous rep

Even better than the first one, this book captured my imagination and my heart. Dreadful Sorry, Clementine brings me back to the reason I started reading sapphic romance in the first place: the warm, accepted, “everything will be okay” vibes. Don’t be fooled though, this second installment has wayyyyyyy more drama, heartbreak and suspense! Clem and Kizzy encounter increasingly difficult situations prompting deep development of their interpersonal relationships with supporting characters throughout the story. Loved the addition of indigenous characters and I will always champion the inclusion of two spirits. The open door spice level definitely amped up in this second book to include multiple two spirit connections and a variety of polyamorous encounters. Ultimately, the second half of Clem and Kizzy’s wagon journey to California is a really poignant look through a sapphic (albeit rose-colored) lense at the toll westward expansion took on pioneers. This is the type of warm, comforting HEA read that I will definitely re-read over and over again.

A great continuation of the first book.

Clem and Kizzy worked hard on the trail to California. They brought an unexpected change to Jed's wagon train, only good things though. There were some trouble makers in the group too, who stirred trouble with the native tribes shaman. It cost Kizzy great heartache at first but then in the end it worked out for both of them in the end. All their friends they had made over the course of the two books all came out on top as well. Great books to read. This one had me shedding some tears at various times. Highly recommend read.

Hits you in the feels

This book completely hit me in the feels. I loved it even more than the first one. It was incredibly poignant and so interesting and different from other books. I loved all the bada$$ women and thoroughly fleshed out side characters. This series is so well-written. There’s plenty of spice, adventure, longing, and lots of laughs along the way. The last 20% of the book was a total sprint to the finish with all of the action, it makes up for some of the slower parts.
