Description

In the delicate dance of Victorian-era society, where decorum dictates every glance and whisper, two women find their carefully constructed boundaries blurring into something far more dangerous than friendship. Don't Want You Like a Best Friend explores the tender, heart-wrenching space between platonic devotion and forbidden longing. As the protagonists navigate the societal expectations laid upon them, their relationship evolves through a captivating rhythm of intellectual sparring, quiet understanding, and the electric tension of unspoken truths. The narrative excels in its character-driven focus, capturing the nuance of a deepening bond that refuses to stay within the lines drawn by custom. What makes this novel truly resonant is the authenticity of its emotional stakes. It avoids grand, sweeping melodrama in favor of small, intimate moments that feel intensely real—the lingering touch of a hand, a private joke shared in a crowded room, and the painful internal struggle of wanting to be seen when the world insists you remain hidden. With a balance of wit and vulnerability, this story provides the kind of warmth that invites repeated readings. It is a heartfelt, deeply satisfying testament to the courage it takes to admit that the person who knows you best is, in fact, the one you love.

Fantastic sapphic romance

Absolutely a new favorite historical romance. This book is described as a queer Bridgerton meets Parent Trap and that is pretty much all you need to know! I do believe it is impossible not to love it. Beth and Gwen are two debutantes seeking/not-so-seeking husbands this season. They realize that if they get Beth's mom to fall in love with Gwen's dad, they might be able to delay or permanently put off their own need for a husband! But they also fall head over hoop skirts for each other 🥰🥵🥰 • The pining and angst was heavenly. Heavenly I tell you! These characters went 👏 through it 👏 and so does the reader, but it is so worth every bit of pain. I just loved it. Pining all over the place. Pining from the side story romances, too! Just so much glorious pining! 🤣 • The pacing was perfect. I am a slow burn lover and this book did it splendidly! They have a connection from the start, but I absolutely love how the desire sort of sneaks up on Gwen and Beth. • Open door, but moderate level of detail. Written in the kind of way where even hand holding and stolen kisses makes you feel a certain type of way. • It's more than one romance. Probably my favorite "more than one romance" ever. Each of the love stories depicted in this book are top tier. You will see! • The father-daughter and mother-daughter dynamics are different but both so special in their own ways. I loved reading about the parents just as much as I loved reading about Beth and Gwen! •The most wonderful…

Extremely predictable

The writing was good, the characters were fairly flushed out. However, I guessed the entire plot in the first 50 pages or so. I even checked reviews that had spoilers to make sure. Now, don't get me wrong. I know romance books tend to have a bit of predictability, it makes them comfy and cozy. However, I don't want to be able to guess everything that's gonna happen within the first fifty pages. I want some surprises in order to keep me engaged. That's really my only critique of the book, because it was the reason I stopped reading around page 70.

Read it in two days.

I really enjoyed reading this book but I’m a hopeless romantic. I’m also not too much of a stickler for historical accuracy. This is a very nice story that kept me entranced. I also enjoyed all the storylines and couples.

Gwen & Beth blossoms

Enjoyed this story of two young women who defied society norms in love and companionship. Author Alban does a great job exploring and maturing the friendship. Though there were parts of the book that dragged a tad, I enjoyed the supporting characters -- Gwen's house maids, her amazing father, and her cousins who had her back no matter what. I also likes the rekindling love between Cordelia and Daschiel-- ( Gwen father ans Beth mom). The author tackled issues delicately around homophobia, women rights, and arranged marriage. Overall, it very sweet ending and so happy that characters were able to stand up for themselves
