Description

The stakes have never been higher for Vesper, the vampire hunter haunted by the burden of a false prophecy. To save the woman she loves, Vesper made a choice that shattered their trust, binding her fate to the vampire princess Aurelia in ways they are only beginning to understand. Now, the deception that was meant to be their salvation has become their undoing, forcing them into the heart of a treacherous witch coven. For Aurelia, life as a captive in a decaying cabin is a bitter pill to swallow. She burns with a volatile mix of hatred and undeniable desire for the hunter who trapped her. Every waking moment is a struggle between the resentment of being a pawn and the magnetic pull of an attraction she can no longer deny. Caught in the middle, Cedar—the witch sworn to shadows—realizes too late that these intruders have ignited a firestorm within the coven. Despite her better judgment, Cedar finds her loyalties fracturing as she grows fiercely protective of the hunter and her vampire charge. In this intoxicating blend of forbidden romance and supernatural peril, the bonds of love are tested by blood, betrayal, and the lethal legacy of a throne they never asked for.

Better than the first, eager for the third

I couldn't put this one down. I knew I'd be in for a treat after being enthralled by the first, but I really wasn't ready. I'm polyamorous and seeing the poly representation here was indescribable. Vesper and Aurelia easily fit Cedar into their dynamic, and she really does round them out in a way I didn't expect. Mae matches the tone of the first, keeping the girls on their toes and submerging the whole story under consistent tension you're just waiting to watch snap. I couldn't get enough of this, and can't wait for the third. All I want is a happy ending for our girls. But whatever happens, I know Mae will deliver an astounding narrative with desperation, tension, and plenty of sex. She's done a magnificent job setting the stage for a truly bombastic final act. I know I'll love as much as the first two.

I dunno…

…how I truly feel about this book in the series. For one, it seemed like too much was going on and at the same time, it was so slow in so many places. I am not sure if that it is it. Vesper and Aurelia in the first book in the first book seemed to obsessed with each other and fought those feelings while being besieged with Vesper trying to fulfill her calling, her destiny for the prophecy foretold. Aurelia and Vesper both come from a tremendously abusive family. While Vesper is also brainwashed. And the Princess is a spoiled and entitled brat, to be sure. I didn’t like in all the ways that their love was manifesting, it was what I call “messy.” But I was drawn to their heat and their passion. Vampires are usually strong, impulsive, possessive, obsessive and territorial. But when it comes to affairs of the heart and bonds…it is forever and typically exclusive. They don’t know how to share that one person. So, most only have that “one” person. And that is what I thought was happening with Vesper and Aurelia. We were introduced to Cedar in the first book. She was always on the periphery. In this book she plays an even bigger role. So much so that we see the author forcing her into this relationship. And it just didn’t seem to work. It was a lot of work on the author’s part to try to make her meld into this relationship. I felt “wrong.” She had the wrong temperament. I didn’t like her character from the very beginning. And the fact that she fell for Vesper. I am not sure how…
