Description

In an era dominated by algorithmic courtship and digital coldness, Leo Herrera offers a radical invitation to return to the visceral, electric reality of physical connection. (analog) Cruising: a manual is more than just a guide; it is a vital reclamation of the queer art of the encounter. Moving beyond the screen-fixated habits of the modern age, Herrera fuses history, poignant poetry, and laugh-out-loud personal anecdotes to demystify the spaces where queer desire once lived—and still breathes. Whether you are a nervous novice stepping into a bathhouse for the first time or a seasoned veteran looking to reconnect with the roots of queer nightlife, this manual provides the essential vernacular for the darkroom. Herrera introduces readers to the subtle science of “caressing cues” and the “museum technique,” providing a sophisticated framework for navigating desire with integrity. By emphasizing the intersection of etiquette, safe exploration, and implied consent, he transforms the act of cruising into a communal ritual of agency and intimacy. Bold, provocative, and deeply human, this book is a call to put down the phone, step into the shadows, and rediscover the profound power of looking, signaling, and connecting in the flesh.

High art

Elegant, respectful, and necessary. The author reveals the delicate and nuanced ways that gay relationships play out in real life both presently and historically. A must for anyone in sexuality studies or queer studies

A Manual

Ok, so everyone's tired of the online apps primarily because they're cold, impersonal and frankly, more voyeuristic than anything else. This book explores alternative spaces where people do actually meet and interact with each other. Cruising is an art and this book certainly tells you how to do it. Whether you'll want to participate at every type of space the author explores is up to you.

Uninspired “Manual” Already Outdated

I love reading gay history and was a bit disappointed with this. If you’re looking for an actual history on the art of cruising, check out “Cruising” by Alex Espinoza. If you’re looking for *why* these spaces are important, I suggest reading “Policing Desire” by Simon Watney instead. This book doesn’t offer anything new to the forefront, which was disappointing. Reading this I heard my internal dialogue go “ok, boomer” multiple times. In the book he talks about the dissatisfaction with online apps because- I kid you not- some guys don’t want to be intimate with racists or republicans. He says this in the book! Instead of embracing how gay culture has changed, instead of looking at the benefits of online spaces (especially when not all men are fortunate to live a gay-dense area), he thinks we all should just go to a park and loiter. Good luck, babe.
