Description

Autumn brings a new rhythm to Adachi and Shimamura’s world as the annual school trip finally arrives. For Adachi, whose entire social compass points directly toward Shimamura, the excursion represents a desperate desire for undivided focus. However, trying to monopolize her favorite person during a chaotic group trip proves to be a delicate balancing act. Her ingrained habit of isolating herself from others begins to hit a snag, forcing her to confront the realities of maintaining a deep, singular connection while navigating the demands of the wider world. To complicate matters, their quiet routines are shattered by an unexpected stowaway lurking within Shimamura's backpack. This curious, pint-sized traveler forces a sudden detour into the surreal, testing the boundaries of their relationship and bringing a touch of the fantastical into their mundane school life. As the leaves begin to turn, the duo must navigate the friction between their internal intimacy and the external pressures of a high school getaway. This installment beautifully captures the quiet intensity of their growing bond. It is a tender, occasionally whimsical exploration of belonging, the weight of expectations, and the precious, fragile space two people carve out for each other amidst the noise of adolescence.

A fun break after the shakeups of the previous volumes!

The book starts with a flash-forward to ten years in the future as Adachi and Shimamura are preparing to travel abroad together. It's nice to see how the girls have grown up and grown together in that time, and there are some really nice moments in the introductory chapter. The change in tone is very welcome after the high emotions of the previous volumes, and it's nice to see the pair settling into their relationship. The school trip is a big opportunity for Adachi and Shimamura to spend time together, but are they comfortable with people knowing they're together? The trip experience was really fun to read and seeing how the two girls can be so different yet complement each other so well shows Iruma is a great character writer. There's even a side character that gets some fleshing out during a personal and extremely entertaining encounter. My only complaint about this volume is some of the localization is a bit too meme-ish. While the translation is really good and faithful overall (I've read these in Japanese as well), some of the choices feel like they won't age well. Aside from that, it reads and flows very well and conveys the original author's voice.
