Such a cute fantasy novel. I love the bird maiden who falls in love with a human premise! And it’s Sapphic! It’s so wonderful to find novels with wlw stories. 💖
Books, chocolates, a nature reserve & a Scrub Jay
A Nest of Magic (Audiobook) is a
whimsical, magical love story that was an enjoyable listen. The only thing I didn't care for was the voice of Rosemary. She sounded a bit flighty for me, but I liked her character. Stevie, Corinthia’s best friend, is the kind of friend every girl should have. She pushes Corinthia out of her safe little library world and brave the outdoors. In turn, Corinthia serves as her wing woman when it comes to the object of Stevie's desire, and local food truck owner, Drew. Kate’s description of the reserve, the maze and Rosemary’s house made me want to pay a visit to Shadow Ridge. I looked up what a Scrub-Jay looks like and they really are quite a pretty bird. I never in a million years figured a romance between a town librarian and a magical Scrub Jay who can change into a beautiful female form, but Kate makes it work! A Nest of Magic is a low angst romance with an HEA that is full of sweet kisses and imagination.

This book is just the right amount of cute with a bit of magic sprinkled in!
Enjoyable with some fun characters
Rating: 2.75 (rounded up)
I usually love cozy witch/fantasy books, and I enjoyed this one, but it wasn't a favorite for me, and that's okay!
I loved the quick pacing of events, the quirky characters and events, and the humor overall. It definitely was a cozy, quick, and fun read! It also gives off nothing but happiness and is a definite nod to book lovers. The friendships in here were great aspects, as well. The author does a great job with describing nature, in particular. I enjoyed some of the fun elements like the Cabinet of Chocolate!
I found that a couple things didn't work for me, but they might for others:
- The language was very flowery (which some people love!), read a bit 'simple'/young to me, and seemed a bit repetitive (in terms of the actual words/descriptions, some of the events, and the main character’s thoughts/feelings).
- I didn't find myself compelled by the story or super connected to the characters. This might have just been because I was able to identify the 'reveal' from the start, but I couldn’t really pinpoint a conflict driving the story forward. The romance seemed established from the start. There was a potential conflict introduced at the very end of the book (chapter 24) that I feel could have been a compelling storyline!
- I'm personally not a fan of 'insta-love' as a trope, but others who are would love this!
Overall, I really just wanted more! The characters, quirks, and humor was so much fun, but I wanted everything to be a little more…
A Nest of Magic - Kate Moseman
This was such the cute sapphic October read. It has all the kind of cozy vibes that I really enjoy. Especially cozy witchy fantasy. I also love that you’re not only get a romance between Corinthia and Rosemary but a romance between Stevie and Drew as well. I adore this author’s writing and I definitely need to read more books by them. I really enjoyed each of these characters.

“First of all, not all romances have ‘smut.’ But if they do, then—like every other tool at the author’s disposal—it shows characters not only pursuing pleasure but their own growth as human beings. What do they like? Who are they becoming? Romance novels can reflect all the different ideas of what love can be: sweetness or spice; fluff or thrills; or all of the above! In fact, it’s not about the sex, although there can be sex. Romance novels are a safe way to discover what you enjoy in your mind or even in real life. They’re a playground for learning about your own happiness.”
