Description

Step into the bohemian heart of 1970s San Francisco, where a crooked staircase leads to 28 Barbary Lane, an address that promises sanctuary for the lost, the searching, and the delightfully eccentric. This omnibus brings together the first three installments of Armistead Maupin’s legendary saga, a vibrant tapestry of urban life that captured a transformative era of American culture with wit, warmth, and groundbreaking honesty. At the center of it all is the enigmatic Mrs. Madrigal, a landlady whose green thumb is matched only by her boundless capacity for unconventional wisdom. Her tenants—including the naive newcomer Mary Ann Singleton, the perpetually lovelorn Michael Mouse Tolliver, and the free-spirited Mona Ramsey—find themselves entangled in a web of chaotic romances, professional stumbles, and startling secrets. Beyond its sharp humor and soap-opera-worthy twists, the series is a poignant exploration of chosen family. Maupin masterfully blurs the lines between straight and gay existence, creating a world where identity is fluid, labels are secondary to loyalty, and every neighbor is a confidant. Whether navigating the complexities of the disco era or the anxieties of modern adulthood, these tales remain a vital, addictive celebration of human connection that feels as relevant and inviting today as it did when they first debuted.

charming and nostalgic

All I want to say is this book took me back to the 70s and 80s and my own experiences at that time. They were so similar to what Mr. Maupin wrote. The characters in this book were so vivid and once again so familiar to me. Every plot twist was a so vivid and compelling, sometimes they were a big shock. I encourage any gay man who was alive at that time to read this book and encourage anyone who was not alive at that time and doesn’t have a firsthand experience of life in San Francisco to have the joy of these books. They were wonderful.

Great summer read !

I found this to be a most interesting book. The characters are believable, in the time and place, and you become easily invested in their problems and successes. You can easily see how one would be anxious to receive their newspaper each day to read the next installment of this story as it was originally presented. If you enjoy good character studies, if you remember the 70"s and 80"s, if you have ever lived in a big city, you will like this book.It is light easy reading a great beach or poolside read.
